Building on Cronos: Crypto.com's Blockchain Ecosystem

Cronos blockchain development — EVM compatibility, the Cronos zkEVM, integration with the Crypto.com ecosystem, and what makes it distinct from other EVM chains.

Cronos is the blockchain developed by Crypto.com (the company, not the chain — the distinction is important). It offers EVM compatibility, IBC connectivity, and access to Crypto.com's 80 million-user distribution. In 2024 they also launched a zkEVM.

Cronos (EVM Chain)

Cronos is an EVM-compatible chain built using the Cosmos SDK with an Ethereum bridge. Full Solidity compatibility — all EVM tooling works with chain ID 25 (mainnet). Consensus is Proof of Authority with a set of validators operated by entities vetted by Crypto.com. Not fully permissionless — the trade-off is high throughput and low fees for centralized control.

Transaction fees are very low (typically under $0.01) and block times are around 6 seconds. The chain is fast and reliable for consumer applications. EVM compatibility means the transition from Ethereum is minimal code-wise.

IBC Connectivity

Because Cronos is built on the Cosmos SDK, it has native IBC support — connecting it to the broader Cosmos ecosystem. This is unusual for an EVM chain. Cronos can bridge with Osmosis, Cosmos Hub, and other IBC-connected chains natively without a third-party bridge for IBC-compatible assets.

The Crypto.com Distribution Advantage

Crypto.com's exchange and Visa card have over 80 million registered users. The Crypto.com DeFi Wallet integrates directly with Cronos. Projects that launch on Cronos can be featured in the Crypto.com ecosystem (app, NFT marketplace, exchange listings). This distribution access is Cronos's main competitive advantage over other EVM chains — it's a direct channel to a large retail audience.

Cronos zkEVM

Launched in 2024, Cronos zkEVM is a ZK rollup that settles on Ethereum. It provides Ethereum-level security guarantees with near-zero fees. This is distinct from the main Cronos chain — it's an Ethereum L2, not a Cosmos chain. The zkEVM targets protocols that want Ethereum security with Crypto.com ecosystem distribution and consumer-level fees.

Ecosystem

DeFi: VVS Finance, Tectonic (lending), Ferro Protocol. NFTs: Crypto.com NFT Marketplace (the most prominent). The ecosystem is smaller than Ethereum, BSC, or Avalanche, but Crypto.com's active promotion of featured projects makes it a strong distribution channel for certain product types.

When to Choose Cronos

Strong fit: consumer applications (gaming, NFTs, payments) that want Crypto.com's marketing reach, projects targeting the retail investor audience already on Crypto.com's platform, EVM projects that want IBC interoperability, and projects that can benefit from co-marketing with a major centralized exchange. Less ideal for: DeFi protocols where decentralization is a core value proposition, projects that need the deep liquidity of Ethereum or Arbitrum.
